Moratuwa at a glance visualize as the edge of the Colombo city limit. The façade transform into suburb in an instant. Moratuwa city indicates a rich transformation based culture in the past decades which is being eroded by the modern open economic trades.
In the inspectional stage there was the idea of making significant railway station which conveys the city’s rich furniture culture parallel to structural artistic concepts introduced by Architect Eladio Dieste. The building is a hybrid version of Eladio Dieste’s concept, reuse timber (robust materials) and structured art to create simple, economically viable built architecturally functional and expressive icon to the Moratuwa city.
The building system is lightly progressive towards the material experience and function based special projection. In the meantime the building acts as a social node or a transit of city character by giving priority to daily commuter’s lifestyle on an elevated status. The propose railway station also supports to re-energize the timber industry by giving the facilities to timber transportation and storing aspects, etc. The linear layout connects with city character by providing a gathering through perfectly placed open and links to the bus terminal.
