Pandura is located in the western province on the island facing the amazing Indian Ocean providing an entry environment for the southern coastal belt in Sri Lanka. Considering the beach stretch from Colombo towards the southern direction, Panadura Beach can be identified as the widest beach after Galle Face Beach. This becomes an opportunity in creating a prominent waterfront recreational area for Panadura.
The existing site is located at the edge where Pandura Beach and Bolgoda Lake meet each other with an exceptional natural setting. The existing coastal stretch in this area which is not properly functioned has been proposed to be developed in the master plan as recreational spaces which promote tourism in Panadura. With the master plan proposal, a potential for the hotel industry is created around the site with a boundless natural setting & the development of a set of high risers.
Primary user- Tourist (Foreign / Local)
Secondary user- Surrounded community/ Occupants
The site consists of the view of both lake & sea creating ample opportunity and desirable quality that fits for a resort hotel. But, prioritizing the private space in design would limit the capability of transforming the surrounded area into much-needed waterfront plaza integrated to the popular beach where the public would thrive for the recreational activities. Furthermore, there is a huge potential to develop it as a recreational and commercial zone where economical & social benefits could be reaped by the community as well as outsiders. Thus, the intention of the design is to smear the private-public demarcation using the proposed plaza in between two cubes running vertically and horizontally that would become an architectural icon on the bare land, focusing eminent prominence towards the building. Using maximum potential of a minimum footprint and much effort taken to keep space for the future extension while leaving a minimal footprint over the social activities of the waterfront, development was taken into consideration in designing while facilitating the residents with utter comfort.
Vertical cube rises upon the surrounding while showcasing the lightweight faced where solidity of the cube has been eliminated with large open areas. Letting cross ventilation, natural light & harvesting solar energy helps to cut the cost of maintaining and consuming the building. Harvested rainwater & recycled water is been used to water the terrace gardens.
Leaving the horizontal public cube open to the street leaving more surface area to enter the building will invite more people to cross through the building to go to the beach & gather on the site. The most identical thing in the design is the public circulation that flows horizontally while on the other hand, private circulation flows vertically.
The language and architectural style of the building celebrates a postmodernist aesthetics appeal over building & this language was picked to integrate the design in between the solid high rise buildings and free recreational grounds.
