This project is focusing on an increasing social issue which affects considerable percentage of children in Kandy city.
Considering the total amount of children in Kandy area, the number of street children is taking a high value comparing to other cities (except Colombo area). The common situation which can be identified in Kandy area is these children are living in the streets with their parents and siblings who work in surrounding or nearby areas. This issue has become an important matter because Kandy is a main city which doesn’t have proper welfare facilities for street children.
Need of the project
There is a great possibility of not fitting these street children into normal school system because they stay away from the normal family setup. If they have a place where they can feel safety, love and affection it will be a great help to build up a better personality for them.
People who are living on streets have to face many difficulties. When parents are trying to find money, there is no one to look after the children. So these children have to face many issues like abusing and neglecting.
This rehabilitation will be helpful not only the children, but also the parents. While the children are getting experience on vocational training, their families also can involve with the process of rehabilitation or they can do their jobs without any disturbances.
Creating a rehabilitation centre provides love, care, affection, the sense of security, formal and vocational education and many other facilities. And it expose children towards creative, active and responsive environments where accept children as they are, valuing their uniqueness.
Identification of the solution
Rehabilitation becomes essential when an individual loses direction into the wrong path and needs to be brought back to the right one. It is a challenging situation when an individual must learn to live a better life after going through obstacles. A complete creative therapy system and training is provided to children, wherein they are given vocational, mental and physical therapy depending on each ones’ needs.
When considering their situation, giving them more space for peer interaction, entertainment and visual connection among themselves can be identified as better solutions. The concept was originated based on these considerations. This can be done by playing with open spaces (courtyards) and different levels.
Process of the project
The process of the project is important because it’s not appropriate that force these children to participate in such programs. If they can fulfill their practical needs like food, clothes and shelter they would come to this place. While they are hanging around, the staff can gradually guide them into a proper way of living.
Concept / Design idea
No one can live without a hope for their lives. Each single person needs a little motivation to walk through the life and overcome difficulties. A child who lives in the street has to face many obstacles and emotional breakdowns than a kid who lives in a home. So these children need a feeling of love and belongingness to overcome these difficulties.
Expected outcome of the project
At the end most important thing is giving a happy childhood and equality to each and every child. Because having a parent he/she does not feel a parental protection. So the main idea of this project is to face the challenge of changing the life style of these children and give a meaning to their lives by removing negative thoughts towards life. Because,
“EVERY CHILD MATTERS”
