The project, occupying office spaces for a technological innovation park, was a part of an urban renewal program conducted by the government to revitalize dilapidated old buildings into modern use. A fast-track construction was proceeded by security forces which required quick design decisions and close consultation.
A tumbledown 18th century British warehouse complex was restored as a model urban space for an environmentally friendly, tropical city. Design approach was to expose the historical layer of the city thus bringing in a sense of belonging to the place, uplifting the livability and image of the city. A green patch was reinforced as a breathing space among the high-dense development surrounding the site. Renovated spaces are connected through a series of open, shaded, green courtyards, with accompanying water features that generate a tranquil ambiance for creative activity.
The historical industrial character of the buildings was preserved with sensibly combined, simple and graceful modern interventions. Industrial aesthetics were preserved. Exposed brick, clear glazing, steel trusses and Zn/Al corrugated roofing, along with exposed ducts, pipes and service elements, retains the industrial character vividly.
In the13-bay building, the white mezzanine floor present in alternative bays is a complementary modern feature, an illusory of a floating cantilever stretching from the small solid oval block below. Also a set of alternative shaded courtyards within, offers natural light and ventilation, visually connecting spaces and bringing in greenery.
